"The Technology Myth" by Carolyn Ho

"The myth is that technology is difficult to understand, learn, capture, grasp. Not true. You do not have to be a geek, a genius, work for an IT department or be an all around tech guru to learn technology of any sort. Here's the analogy. I had to fix my bathroom sink because it was clogged. I had no idea what i was doing. I looked underneath, shut off the water and unscrewed the pipes. I unclogged them and screwed them back in. I fixed my clog. Unbelievable, I never though I could do it. The same applies to computers. Yes, it's true, if you are creating software or video games, 3d animation it is very difficult. But so is Cantonese, and people learn it every day. Most programs can be learned from the manual or the tutorials within the software. I learned everything i know in help menus not in computer classes. Whatever works for you is fine; you just have to know that you can do it. You just have to try."
My opinion on this article is that the women yes is trying to say that with work anyone can learn about computer technology. But learning it just like Cantonese, will not happen over night. Even studying this from college i can say that animation and computer programming were some of the most tedious classes that i have yet taken here. To compare this to cleaning out a sink?, I think not. I dont really think that the personal story attached to this really does anything for her story, I know the concept, but the comparison is a little too far off for me.

From Rich to Fraud; Comparison Assignment

The story that I chose for this assignment was one that I had not known a lot about before now. My story is that of former New Jersey Nets basketball player C. Tate George, being charged with Fraud. The following is an excerpt from a news article:

"Former New Jersey Nets basketball player C. Tate George will appear this afternoon before a federal magistrate in Newark on charges of allegedly orchestrating a $2 million investment fraud scheme, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said Friday.

George, 43, who also played basketball for the Milwaukee Bucks, is charged with one count of wire fraud. Prosecutors say George, as the CEO of The George Group, told prospective investors, including several former pro athletes, he had more than $500 million in assets under management and urged them to invest with the firm. He allegedly told investors their moeny would be used for real estate development projects in Florida, Illinois, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The criminal complaint, unsealed Friday, charges that George used the money from new investors to pay old investors instead of developing real estate projects. George also used the money for home improvement projects, restaurant meals and clothign and gas, the complaint says.

If convicted, George could be sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined $250,000.

George could not be reached for comment. "

The coverage on this case was widely known and had many different media's that could be found on it. When dealing with each kind of media I found that print was the one that was most direct with the story. It gave you all the facts about the fraud and told you just what was needed to know, without going into vasts amount of detail. The Online sources that I found gave more information about people being involved with the case and backgrounds on them also, and information on people's reactions to the event. The video media was more or less like the online resource. It gave much more details and background information on the story, along with other interviews that were not done with the print media. After looking and watching, I came to the conclusion that the Online Source was more useful for me. This media gave me more details about the story, that really helped me develope what was going on and what had really happened. I felt like with the more detail I got then with the print media that i better understood the effects and prosecution of the act. The Online source also was better than watching it on the news stories, because I was able to access the information more effiecently, and was quicker to be able to read and digest the information. The print media that I found for this article was from the Wall Street Journal, the online resources was from onenewsprint.com, and the video's were done by many different stations and I located them off of youtube.com.

Who took the Apple?

A crashing rumor that an employee for Apple lost a prototype iPhone in a bar earlier this summer. The report itself remains unconfirmed, but resulting from this Apple is taking steps to help ensure an incident like this does not occur again. The company listed that there are two job positsions opened for product security team in the managment position.
The canidate for this position would hold the responsibility for overseeing the protection of, and managing risks to Apple's unreleased products and related intellectual property.
The loss of this potential iPhone 5 is the cause of massive whirlwind rumors and reporting, echoing the media frenzy that occured when an Apple employee was involved in a similar incident last year. The police who insisted in the search did state that they helped apple with searching for missing property.
The best part for me of this article is the fact that there are prototypes being tested which will eventually lead to the release of my future phone. The article then goes into describe some of the new features of the iPhone 5 which are:
"Rumors suggest the next iPhone, which could be launched in either September or October, will feature a larger screen and faster processor, along with an 8-megapixel camera and possibly a redesigned body. There's also a widespread theory that Apple intends to release a line of low-cost iPhones to complement its next-generation device, which in turn would allow Cupertino to combat the rising number of cheap Google Android smartphones on the market."
Hopefully my next iPhone blog will be about the new looks in and features hands on, with the phone in hand:)

Google Android..What will Come of You?

Why the Company should be worried!
Even though it may seem like Android is high on their success, but behind it all is a vast amount of lawsuits of both small and large companies, trying to get a piece of this market that could generate many more billions of dollars in the upcoming years. Some of the lawsuits are from very common known companies like Oracle, Microsoft, Barnes & Noble, and even Apple. Wanting licensing fee's on that or stopping of the sale of the products altogether.
The main ten reasons that this story points out why google is worried are the following:
Its patent portfolio falls short.
Litigation is everywhere.
Android is under attack.
It's a matter of survival.
Apple has a strong portfolio.
It might be Microsoft's "in".
Vendor relationships.
It really can stifle innovation.
The future is in doubt.
Nothing will stop the litigation.
What reallly interested me about this blog is that I myself own a android phone, and was unaware of the lawsuits that were going on, and was interested in how this may effect people who own the phone already with google software and what not. I would really like to look farther into this and follow it, to see the outcome. Hopefully I will not be affected personally because my hope is to own an iphone next month when apple releases!

Who needs a Wallet anymore?!?

The way our technology is advancing I don't forsee us having to carry any kind of personal documentation or money, cause everything is being created to be done through the technology of your phone. The blog itself goes:
"I forgot my wallet at home! Don't worry, it's in your phone! The virtual mobile wallet is comign to life as Google launches their implemation of the Google Wallet. They are currently working with Citibank and Mastercard. Any Near Field Communication capable device will work and users will able to load Google wallet with funds from their Citibank, Mastercard, or a Google prepaid card which can be funded from any account."
I think that this is crazy that technology is able to go so far, but yet the convience of it will be used by many. Having your phone also be able to do this capability will be a helpful thing for people to have. Nothing like not having to worry about being mugged. This article I found quite interesting about the technology that may be available soon.

What IT certification is right for you?

While on the website I found a lot of IT related subjects, and one that really caught my eye was an information blog to help people interested in IT find out what department fits them best. The blog itself talks about how vast and complex the industry is and trys to help by giving their support in showing popular catergories.
Some of the categories that they listed for viewers to look through were developer, technical support, systems engineer, network, business analysis, database analyst, computer forensics and security.
I think that this site if very imformative in which describing what each feild listed above provides and covers, and a general knowledge of it, and would suggest this site to anyone itnereseted in pertaining a field related to IT.

"Identified"

This new search engine is causing such a riot, because its results are based of your facebook actions. The engine is supposed to help as a "professional search engine for recruiters and employers to find potential employees, and for employees to find companies for which to work". The creator of the search engine is Brendan Wallace, and Adeyemi Ajao (Standord grads).
The search engine takes your information like employers, educational history, work history, connections, name, and current profile picture.
After reading this I can see how people might be upset with the search engine, and that just by looking at the school in which they attended does not show how you are with work or grades, but name. How much can an employeer really learn from this information, what is it based on for score, how do they rank on higher than the other, and so on. If you visit the site you will also see how the author thinks about the program as they are very opinionated with the discussion.
I hope to eventually be able to find this test, based on history, and see what my own actual score would be.

Shady RAT

Since one of my beats for the class was Information Technology, and I have not yet been able to meet with any of the Instructors I have decided to find live events happening all around the world that are dealing with Information Technology, and Computer Technology. The website above was just the first that I found about the subject, and it was quite interesting. Nothing that i would want to do one day as a career, but interesting in the way of how important the job that these men hold, protecting from virus spreads.
The article covers a lot about a specific persons experience to a hacker invasion. He then tells you what he did under this attack to save his work and programs. After closing off certain networks, he was left with reprogramming and also stepping up security. The last part of the article talks about seven steps to protect yourself from this happening and what to do if it was. I believe that this was the most important part of the article, and also very imformative.
I have never been a fan of anything that deals with computer language or programming, and have dreaded any class with those words in it. But I find it very interesting to look and see what this field requires, and some of the problems they have to deal and worry about. But above all my favorite part of the article was naming the hackers "Operation Shady RAT".

Traffic Scams

Traffic Camera's are now being scammed. People are always worrried, if for some reason they have been caught by one, and how will they know or find out. This has opened a window for scammers to take advantage of people by telling them they were caught and have to pay the fine over the phone. There plan is flawed, but does have a basis to work for someone who does not know about how things should work. The url i found very interesting, and the scam something that people should be aware of.
I think that this post really shows you how this new technical media has been taken advantage of from others, and how with people not familiar with these cameras and how they work, that this can lead to manipulation.

Celebrating Facebook

After reading this post I find it very interesting, and very true. I believe that social networking and things like facebook, really do inform the public about events that even I did not know about till looking at a post or blog. We have become so familliar with blogging and posting that we do it not only about personal stuff, but our veiws on issues with society or public events. I remember when Osama Bin Laden was assasinated, the only reason I knew this right away was because i went on facebook and was bombarded with posts about the news. This happens even with the little stuff like whats on tv (Jersey Shore seems to cause a lot of updates for me). I think what this really shows is that with the social media there are some people who are shown more about whats going on with the community and world that only know it because of social networking.
The issue with the teachers I can also see why they do have a problem with social networking, because they are subjected to see the bad results from it, like student bullying or obscene comments about faculty or the school itself. No teacher wants to witness this, or a student on a social network while in a class, and not paying attention to a lesson. With this said I don't think they should be completley against it either. Social Networking, and Media in my eyes, does more good than harm.
It would have been more interesting i feel to see what else the survey asked or even specific awnsers.

This link is about the new iphone that is said to be released next month. I think that this is a good example of New media.
I think that this post shows us how far we have come with the technology of Cell phones.
I unlike some are very excited for this phone to come out because I plan to finally own my first Iphone, and finally get rid of my Android.
One of the things that i found quite interesting about the phone is all the new updates to the software but also cosmetics of the phone.
The only reason why I am nervous about getting the phone is because most new models have their malfunctions, and I'd rather not have to deal with a malfunctioning phone.
I am definetly a person who has their phone by their side, and this link really interests me personally about the new upcoming release.

Information Technology

Like most of my beats Information Technology is not a well known career for me. When looking up about the subject I found a quote that I found quite interesting about the topic.
"This program creates the go-to people for cutting edge Information Technology (IT) solutions. Early on students learn all of the hardware applications to make a computer and later learn more complex operating systems, networking, and programming languages. "
Below is a link that lists more of the details about the program, and its credentials and skills.

Computer Information Systems

One of my beats for blogging was Computer Information Systems, and I really don't know a lot about the subject, so for my first blog I have decided to share a link none other than the one SUNY Canton provides. Attached below is the overview of the course itself including a the list of courses that the students have to obtain. I thought this was a good way to start because I honestly don't know much about any other degree than the one I am trying to obtain. Not because i don't care, but because I have been set with my degree of choice since highschool, and have not really look into anyother.
Some of the things that I found interesting about the course was that some of the obtained skills that they will have developed after graduating, myself as a GMMD student will have also obtained. An example of this would be Web designing, and Programming. Both which are the two things I am dreading taking, and will not use as much as other skills, but none the less have a knowledge of.
The next step that I hope to take for further blogs is to talk to the students in this feild and find out more about what they think about it, or things that they are doing. I also have two more beats that are related to this degree that I am planning to touch basis with.
